Broker report from Croatia, Aquijo joins the Y.CO charter fleet, MYBA Charter Show is moving to Barcelona

Broker Report: On Charter in Croatia with Missy Johnston of Northrop and Johnson Worldwide Yacht Charters

Charter broker Missy Johnston of Northrop and Johnson Worldwide Yacht Charters has just returned from Croatia, where she checked out the local gulets and sights so that she can help charter clients arrange the best possible itineraries.

“I went to see and to cruise on Croatian gulets, which are similar to Turkish gulets, and in fact there are many Turkish gulets that have relocated to Croatia for this coming summer from Turkey,” she told CharterWave. “Croatian gulets are, of course flagged to Croatia, and have Croatian crew. We cruised onboard the Croatian gulet Alba in company with the Croatian gulet Libra and the Croatian motorsailer Navilux for seven days from Split to Dubrovnik, and visited all of the best islands and ports in this section of Dalmatia.

“We visited the islands of Brac, Hvar, Viz, Korcula, Mljet and Sipan, along with the coastline of the Peljesac Peninsula. After, we spent two nights in Dubrovnik Old Town, to really explore and learn this UNESCO World Heritage site and try to recommended restaurants such as Nautika Restaurant, just outside the Old Town gates.

“We also drove along the coastline to visit Ston and Mali Ston. Ston was once a famous location for sea salt collection. The area, which is at the head of a long bay with freshwater streams feeding the bay, is excellent for oyster and mussel farms, shellfish that prefer protected, calm, brackish water. The shellfish are plucked right out of the water in Ston and Mali Ston, directly to your plate. It could be called “Sea to Table.”

“We spent an additional three days driving around northern Montenegro to see all of the ports on both the northern and southern side of the Bay of Kotor, and of course, Old Town Kotor. Of note to see on a charter pickup in Tivat or Kotor are Old Town Kotor, with the extensive rock fortifications behind the walled Old Town, and the little town of Perast.”

Aquijo Joins Y.CO Charter Fleet

Earlier this year, the world’s largest high-performance ketch, the 282-foot Aquijo, was delivered to her owners following joint construction by two of the world’s premier shipyards, Oceanco and Vitters. Now comes word that Aquijo will charter as part of the Y.CO fleet.

The mast aboard Aquijo is reportedly just shy of 300 feet tall, making her a head-turning sight in any harbor in the world. She’s not quite the largest sailing yacht for charter around the globe today (the iconic 288-foot Perini Navi Maltese Falcon is bigger) but she sure is close. Without question, Aquijo will be the most sought-after super-sailing yacht for charter this summer in the Mediterranean and this coming winter in the Caribbean.

Y.CO is offering Aquijo at a weekly base rate of €400,000 for 12 guests. That’s the same as the lowest weekly rate for Maltese Falcon.

One of the standout features aboard Aquijo is her aft beach club, a space that is traditionally found only aboard megayachts. A spa, steam room, sauna and hot tub are all here, with views at water level.

Up one level is the aft deck, which is the start of a clever indoor-outdoor bar.

Any reputable charter broker can tell you more about Aquijo or help you become one of the yacht’s first charter clients.

MYBA Charter Show is Moving to Barcelona

MYBA, the Worldwide Yacht Association announced in June that the annual charter-yacht show long held in Genoa, Italy, will move to a new venue at OneOcean Port Vell in Barcelona, Spain, for the next three years.

“The decision to award the MYBA Charter Show to Barcelona was the result of a comprehensive survey across our members and the previous attendees of the show, followed by an in-depth review of the myriad of factors which contribute to the overall success of the show, both financially and from the perspective of all attendees,” James Graham-Cloete, chair of the MYBA Charter Shows Panel, stated in a press release. “From the short list of venues, OneOcean Port Vell came out on top. Furthermore, MYBA hope that bringing the show to Barcelona will further speed up and enhance any progress in opening up the charter market and regulations in these attractive cruising grounds.”

In 2013, the Spanish government announced the repeal of its matriculation tax for charter yachts more than 15 meters (about 50 feet) in length overall. Previously, the tax was charged to any large-yacht owner wanting to offer a vessel for charter in Spanish waters. The tax was equal to 12 percent of the vessel’s value, which discouraged yacht owners from making their boats available in Spanish waters, because they could charter elsewhere in Western Europe without paying any such tax.

Since the regulations have been adjusted, increasingly new and large charter yachts have applied for Spanish charter licenses, offering itineraries primarily in the Balearic Isles.
