Last month, I mentioned a tantalizing tidbit from Edmiston and Company, which has for several years now managed the 130-foot river expedition vessel Aqua and a larger version called Aria in the Peruvian Amazon. The rumor was that a third vessel would soon be added to the owner’s fleet, Aqua Mekong, based in Southeast Asia.
The rendering at right is the first one that has been released of the Aqua Mekong, which is now officially scheduled to launch in September 2014. The owners have hired Michelin-starred chef David Thompson to be the charter vessel’s executive chef, bringing experience from his highly regarded Nahm restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand. He will create a menu for the Aqua Mekong that focuses on the cuisines of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
“I was determined to identify the very best and most creative chef in the region for my second river destination,” Francesco Galli Zugaro, CEO and founder of Aqua Expeditions, stated in a press release. “As Asia’s top-ranked chef on San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants, David is the perfect fit for the exclusive Aqua Mekong, because his unique culinary experience and first-hand knowledge of Asian ingredients and palates will enable us to provide guests with the authentic culinary experience they expect from an Aqua Expeditions cruise.”
Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available. My interest is certainly piqued.
