America’s Cup Racing Comes Home
On June 26 – July 1, America’s Cup racing will return to its historic setting of Newport, R.I., although in a vastly different form. Instead of the 12-Meters that vied for the Cup in the waters off Newport from 1958-1983, this summer’s contenders are the fast new AC45 sailing catamarans with their 70-foot fixed wing sails. They will be facing off in the America’s Cup World Series, a warm-up for main Cup event in San Francisco in 2013. All eyes will be on the Artemis Racing Team, representing the Royal Swedish Yacht Club, the current World Series points leader.
The Newport event is based at Fort Adams State Park, where fans can visit the America’s Cup Village and watch the races right offshore in Narragansett Bay. The best place to see the action, however, is from the deck of your own luxury charter yacht. The America’s Cup World Series would make an exciting start to a vacation spent cruising to scenic New England ports such as Newport, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
