Sailing yacht Phocea is seized; discounts on megayacht charter; MYBA to launch YachtFolio and more

Authorities Seize Sailing Yacht Phocea in Vanuatu on Drug, Other Charges

On Sunday, June 22, authorities in Vanuatu seized the 246-foot sailing yacht Phocea, according to reports from multiple news outlets.

Officers searched the yacht, confiscated documents, and arrested two of the 16 crew members onboard, the reports stated. The two crew members who were detained are Tongan and Samoan. Charges later were publicized accusing the yacht of being involved in drugs, money-laundering, and arms, and a second search of the yacht was reportedly done to confiscate more items.

According to the Vanuatu Daily Post, Phocea was registered in Vanuatu in 2005 as a diplomatic yacht owned by Anh Quan, who became a citizen of Vanuatu in 2012.

Phocea was originally built in 1976 at Toulon Naval Dockyard. She was the largest private sailing yacht in the world until the launch of the 289-foot Royal Huisman Athena in 2004.

Most recently, Phocea was listed as part of the Fraser Yachts Worldwide charter fleet. She was offered at a lowest weekly base rate of about $200,000 for 12 guests. As of this writing, Phocea no longer appears on the Fraser Yachts website. The company did not release a statement about the seizure in Vanuatu.

Notable Number of Megayacht-Charter Discounts Exceed 15 Percent for August

August marks the height of the summer yacht charter season in the Mediterranean, which is the busiest market for crewed yacht charter in the world. A steady stream of discount announcements indicates that supply is continuing to outpace demand, with a notable number of discount offers regularly exceeding 15 percent for yachts that are 125 feet and larger.

Some examples include the 204-foot Oceanco motoryacht Lady Christina (shown in the photograph at right), which is giving 10 percent to 20 percent off all West Mediterranean charters throughout August; the 129-foot Heesen motoryacht Mac Brew, which is giving a 20-percent discount from August 2-9 in Corsica; the 157-foot CRN motoryacht Kanaloa, which is offering as much as 35-percent off charters of 10 to 14 days in the Mediterranean from August 10-29; and the 150-foot Heesen motoryacht Sea Dweller, which is giving a 20-percent discount on charters of at least 10 days in the West Mediterranean throughout August.

These are just some of the publicly advertised discounts available to charter clients right now. Brokers tell CharterWave that many yachts in this size range are also giving substantial discounts or bonus days onboard without making the details public.

Any reputable charter broker can tell you more about yachts that are currently available in the Mediterranean at reduced rates or with incentive packages.

Brokerage-Market Report Cites Record Number of Price Reductions on Yachts for Sale

The most recent newsletter from Ocean Independence includes information about the yacht-sales market that is important to anyone booking a charter yacht vacation. The company, which controls the world’s largest fleet of crewed charter yachts, reports a record number of price reductions for yachts on the brokerage market during the month of April.

Usually, according to Ocean Independence, about 40 yachts change their asking prices in any given month. During April, that number shot up to more than 75. The number of yacht owners willing to take less money in a sales deal essentially doubled. The yacht brokerage market, Ocean Independence says, is once again in “full readjustment mode.”

The company does not comment on whether this is likely a one-time blip or the beginning of another economic bounce for the yachting industry. However, smart charter clients will be aware of whether their chosen yacht is not only for charter, but also for sale, and if so, at what asking price. Anyone booking a yacht that is for sale should ask a reputable charter broker for an assessment of how actively the owner is trying to sell, to ensure that the yacht will still be available when the vacation dates arrive.

Plenty of for-sale yachts provide excellent charter vacations, and good charter brokers will help negotiate contracts that protect a client’s deposit no matter what happens in the brokerage market. The new report, however, is a reminder of the need to be aware of any charter yacht’s current for-sale status.

MYBA Says Yachtfolio System Due to Launch This Fall

MYBA announced in mid-July that the new Yachtfolio charter-booking system should be online and available to qualified charter brokers this fall.

The system is expected to include more than 1,400 yachts 76 feet and larger that are available for charter. Training will be available on the new system by video as well as at in-person seminars.

After Phase 1 of the launch is complete, Phase 2 will include expanding the system to include yachts for sale. A third phase is also planned with additional enhancements.

Also from MYBA is news that the 25th annual MYBA Charter Show in Genoa, Italy, has been scheduled April 29 through May 3, 2013.

CharterWave Editor Kim Kavin Publishes Ninth Book

On August 1, New York-based publisher Barron’s released Kim Kavin’s ninth book, and her first hardcover. It is titled Little Boy Blue: A Puppy’s Rescue from Death Row and His Owner’s Journey for Truth.

Little Boy Blue tells the story of Blue, a puppy Kavin adopted in New Jersey and later learned was once on death row in a gas-chamber shelter in North Carolina. She traced Blue’s history back to the cage where he once sat, and she uses his story to tell the broader story of dog-rescue efforts across America today.

“Believe it or not, but there is a yachting connection in this book,” Kavin says. “One of the dog-rescue workers I interviewed was cruising on a yacht from the Bahamas back to Miami to save a Labrador who was scheduled to die that day in the Florida shelter. She also told me about a dog she saved previously who was once slated to be killed, but who now lives on a motoryacht with his family.”

A portion of proceeds from sales of Little Boy Blue will benefit the Petfinder Foundation. Learn more at the Little Boy Blue website.

Motoryacht of the Month: Mogambo

Mogambo is a 241-foot Nobiskrug that is brand-new to charter for the summer 2012 season in the Mediterranean. Her masculine interior decor is unique in the industry, with details such as tables finished in goat skin, dining-room chairs finished in six-tone fur inlay, a sculpture made of crushed metal leaf, and a triptych wall panel made of sandblasted, acid-etched glass.

Mogambo also has all of the top-notch amenities that should be onboard a charter yacht with a weekly base rate of €650,000. They include Quantum zero-speed stabilizers, an elevator that services most decks, an air-conditioned sundeck gymnasium, a cinema room with projector screen, a full disc-jockey setup, an 80-inch 3-D television in the sky lounge, Tai Ping silk carpeting, a teak beach club and spa, a massage room, a hair salon, a scuba diving room, a 44-foot tender as well as a 28-foot tender, and a safe room for security purposes.

Sailing Yacht of the Month: Kestrel

The 106-foot Kestrel is Hull No. 1 in a new line of sailing yachts by Ron Holland. She was built in Turkey for a consortium of owners headed by a man with lots of experience in gulet charters.

“His idea was to combine the guest-comfort features of a gulet in a boat that actually performed well when sailing,” Capt. Ian Heseltine told CharterWave. “There is something happening in Turkey these past few years, where owners are realizing that there is a market for charter other than gulets. Kestrel is at the forefront of that.”

One of the most interesting features aboard Kestrel is her movable cockpit seating, shown in the photograph at right.

Captain of the Month: Jonathan Chell

Jonathan Chell enjoyed a long career as a chef before earning his captain’s license and taking command of the 86-foot Sunseeker motoryacht Firecracker, which is part of the Ocean Independence charter fleet.

“We are new to the charter scene, but we all bring a very strong hospitality background,” Chell told CharterWave. “I worked at Fearrington House in North Carolina, which is a member of the five-star Relais & Chateaux organization. My wife, Hilary, who is our chef, has a diploma in hospitality and catering management and has worked in hotels and restaurants in the U.K. as well as in the States. Our stewardess, Kate Daniel, spent four years working as a hostess and waitress in ski chalets in the French Alps.

“We are ready to make charter clients feel very comfortable.”

Chef of the Month: Justin Arblaster

Justin Arblaster wowed a number of leading charter brokers with a six-course dinner at the recent MYBA Charter Show onboard the 194-foot Benetti motoryacht Meamina, which is part of the YPI Charter fleet.

Some of the dishes he prepared included charred sweet corn soup with herb foam and tomato confit; prawns wrapped in pancetta with a spring onion, saffron, and crab risotto; and a chocolate parfait with chocolate and almond biscotti, candied orange peel, and raisins marinated in coconut liquor.

“If we had advance notice, then yes, we could do that on a charter,” Arblaster told CharterWave. “Obviously we have lots of stores and provisions, but for something like that we would need to be able to order in advance from our providers. If we can get what we need, then we can do it.”

Broker of the Month: Beverly Parsons

Beverly Parsons of Interpac Yachts recently attended the annual charter-yacht show in Marmaris, Turkey, where she has been visiting since the 1980s.

“Each year, the quality of the fleet gets better and better,” Parsons told CharterWave. “Many of the newer gulets feature beautiful wood and marble interiors with unique features such as LED lighting systems. Most now offer WiFi, high-end music systems, and international dining options. Many feature satellite communications, 24-hour air conditioning, spa showers, safes, and minibars in the staterooms. Most of the yachts have at least one English-speaking crew member, and a high percentage now have female hostesses, whereas in the past all of the crew members were men.

“I also noticed a lot of competition and creativity among the chefs this year,” she continues. “It was also clear that more and more of the crew are becoming expert sailors and enjoy sailing when the winds allow.”
