Fleet Miami is launched, Brazil yacht charter option, 196-foot Benetti motoryacht Swan and more

Charter Yacht Owner Launches NetJets-Style Charter Company

Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy and owner of the Feadship motoryacht Harle as well as the Delta motoryacht Usher, has opened a company called Fleet Miami that is being marketed as the NetJets of the yacht charter industry.

According to the Fleet Miami website, the company is intended to work in conjunction with traditional charter yacht marketing. Fleet Miami will provide yacht owners with management, floating crew, dockage, fuel services and provisioning, and with marketing, to fill unused dates on a yacht’s calendar. “The only thing you have to lose is the inefficient, idle time your yacht sits unused,” the site states.

Currently, Fleet Miami is offering two charter options for members: a seven-day Florida Keys itinerary and a four-day Bahamas itinerary. Membership includes a weather guarantee (if it rains, you get extra days of charter). Members can use any yachts in the fleet; buy-ins start at $250,000 for 275 credits and go up to $1 million for 1,200 credits. One credit equals $1,000 worth of charter, allowing members to mix and match the size and style of yachts they book over time.

As of this writing, nine yachts are listed as part of Fleet Miami, including three–Harle (shown at right), Usher and the Eastbay powerboat Shredder–owned by Saylor.

New Charter Yacht Option in Brazil

Brazil is a cruising destination that the international charter market has long sought to expand, and France-based Neo Yachting is now entering the market with the 75-foot Intermarine motoryacht Anema & Core.

Neo is calling Anema & Core “the most recent and luxurious yacht available for charter in Brazil.” She’s a 2011 build that takes eight to 12 guests with three crew, including at least one who speaks English. Cruising speed is about 24 knots, and there’s a full disc-jockey setup on the flybridge.

Anema & Core will be available in Rio De Janeiro, Angra Dos Reis, Paraty and the Sao Paulo region. She currently has availability during this summer’s FIFA World Cup. The lowest weekly base rate is $49,000.

Motoryacht of the Month: Swan

Swan is a 196-foot Benetti motoryacht that launched in 2011, and that entered the charter market during summer 2013 in the Mediterranean. She did close to six weeks of bookings during her inaugural season and was among the most talked-about yachts at the start of the 2013-14 Caribbean season thanks to her striking Pierre-Yves Rochon interior décor.

The owner had Swan listed for sale at €39 million (about $53 million) at the time of our onboard tour, so that gives you an idea of the yacht’s quality and the investment made in her build and décor. She has a Salvador Dali sculpture in the main foyer, Tai Ping silk carpeting throughout, glass-encased Lalique sculptures that are backlit in the master bathroom, and more accouterments that create a feeling of high-end luxury on board. From the moment our editor stepped inside Swan’s main salon, she knew she was in a space unlike any other she’d seen at sea.

Sailing Yacht of the Month: Queen South III

Queen South III is a 1997 gulet built in Turkey and originally christened QS Atlantic. Her current owner took possession in 2010 and completed a refit in 2013 at the Hinckley shipyard in Newport, Rhode Island. When our editor stepped aboard the 118-foot yacht in December of that year, Queen South III was looking smart.

The refit was a two-year endeavor that included sandblasting and repainting the hull, installing all new teak decks, placing new carpeting inside, and upgrading mechanical systems including generators and air conditioning. The yacht’s steel hull was made to look like painted mahogany, giving Queen South III a beautiful profile under way.

Capt. Edson Hazell has been aboard Queen South III for nine years, and even though the winter 2013-14 season was the yacht’s first in charter, he brings strong knowledge of what guests in the Caribbean will like. That’s because he’s a native of Bequia, an island in the southern Caribbean. To give you an idea of what this means, we can tell you that our editor was invited to join Hazell for lunch. He decided to wake up early, take the dinghy out and catch a few fresh lobsters for the chef to prepare. We can’t recall another captain ever doing anything remotely like that—such a personal touch.

Captain of the Month: Dean Pilatti

Dean Pilatti is captain aboard the 183-foot Benetti motoryacht Jaguar, which used to charter as Four Aces and now has a new owner.

“We put in some new carpets, had some marble worked on, and we now have a pair of 20-foot ski boats that were purpose-built for wakeboarding and water skiing,” Pilatti told CharterWave. “We also got all new exterior cushions.”

Jaguar is expected to be available in the East Mediterranean this summer, including in Croatia, which is one of Pilatti’s favorite destinations for cruising. He expects to be on board with much of the same crew who made the yacht’s winter Caribbean season memorable.

“The chef has been with me for four years,” Pilatti says. “I found him on Facebook. I put up a post and he answered it in three minutes. He’s a classically trained chef. British. He’s creative, and he has an incredible appreciation for food.

“With our whole crew, I think we all genuinely care for each other as a family. We want our guests to relax quickly and be in a place that feels like their home.”

Chef of the Month: Angela Lozano McCrea

Chef Angela Lozano McCrea is turning out superyacht-quality food aboard the 131-foot Princess motoryacht Imperial Princess, which she joined following work with her husband, a captain, aboard the Tiger Woods-owned Christensen motoryacht Privacy.

“Everything started at home in Colombia,” she says of her cooking skills. “My mom always let me cook as a child. That gave me a chance to be creative. I studied finance and earned a master’s degree, and I became a stock-market trader in Colombia. It helped me learn budgets and planning and staying calm, and on weekends I did parties and made cakes. Then I went to England to learn proper English, and I cooked on weekends, and I saw that I could do this as a career. My friend was a caterer, and I learned how to cook and make money.

“When I was 28, I went to Le Cordon Bleu in Canada. I graduated with honors and opened a catering business in Colombia. A year later, I went on vacation to Florida and met Richard on a blind date. We started dating, and he was working as the first mate on Privacy, and I filled in one week cooking for the crew. The captain offered me a job, and when the chef left, I was promoted. I also was asked to cook for the owner at his home.”

Charter Broker of the Month: Claire Van Der Vorm

Charter yacht broker Claire Van Der Vorm of the Cecil Wright agency recently returned from several days of cruising in the Seychelles aboard the 170-foot Alloy sailing yacht Red Dragon.

“Having seen firsthand how Capt. Ben Marshall and his crew operate, I cannot recommend them highly enough,” she reports. “They keep the Dragon in a state of perfection but are also great with kids, never too busy for a water-gun fight, piggy back, treasure hunt or a game of beach rugby. They pull out all the stops for their guests.”

Van der Vorm says the Red Dragon crew recently welcomed the return of New Zealand-born chef Morgan Lonegran, who is trained to a three-star Michelin level, is passionate about baking and pastries, and has some serious sushi-making skills.
