charter yacht SamarDiscounts Continue to Flood Charter Market Worldwide

With the summer charter season now more than half over, yachts of all sizes and styles continue to announce deals and discounts on a daily basis. Even in the Western Mediterranean, which is the world’s most popular location for crewed yacht charter, rates are being discounted to lure last-minute bookings during what used to be jam-packed, high-season weeks.

The most recent flood of discounts highlights a noteworthy change in thinking by yacht owners and management companies. Previously, many owners and managers sought to entice charter clients with value incentives as opposed to price reductions. Now, those same owners and managers may be resigned to the fact that price corrections are required to generate charter business as the global recession continues.

“Most yacht owners started off by adding value to the charter price, such as including relocation fees or other onboard services,” states the most recent newsletter from Fraser Yachts Worldwide. “In recent weeks, as the season marches on, we’ve seen straight discounts being offered, sometimes up to 35 percent off the standard rates.”

Several management companies are also now acknowledging that the majority of their charter bookings for the summer season are being completed at the last minute. Prior to the global economic crash, prime summer charter dates were regularly booked as much as a year in advance.

Also worth noting is that several motoryachts managed by leading companies are already announcing discounts for the upcoming winter charter season in the Caribbean. Examples include the 115-foot motoryacht El Jefe, part of the International Yacht Collection fleet, which recently announced a 20-percent discount for the first charters booked before October 31; and the 254-foot motoryacht Samar, shown in the photograph above and part of the Edmiston and Company fleet, which is offering a 15-percent discount (a €100,000 value) on winter charters that are booked before August 31.

Fraser Yachts Worldwide Russian-language websiteFraser Yachts Launches Russian-Language Website

Fraser Yachts Worldwide has launched a Russian-language version of its website. According to the company, the site is the world’s first Russian web portal developed by a major, international luxury yacht brokerage company.

“A company that puts its clients first should at least be able to speak to them in their own language,” Hein Velema, Fraser’s CEO, said in a news release. “Our clients from Russia have yachts under construction, under management and for sale and charter; we’re now in an even better position to meet their needs.”

Fraser has offered its charter brochures in Russian for several years. The company also has a number of Russian-speaking brokers and staff.

kids swimmingSurvey: 3 in 4 Yachts Welcome Families with Children

The Triton, a publication written primarily for yacht captains and crew, published the results of an interesting survey in July. The magazine asked nearly 140 yacht crew members how they feel about having children younger than 15 as guests. Nearly three out of four said they enjoy the experience.

That’s of course good news for anyone interested in booking a charter yacht for a family vacation, but it also drives home the point that some yachts are far more kid-friendly than others. If about 25 percent of yacht crew do not enjoy having children onboard, then it is in your best interest to avoid booking charters aboard those yachts if children are part of your group.

Any reputable charter broker can give you insights into which yachts and crew do best with children. Simply tell your broker that you would like to see the reviews given by clients who brought children aboard during previous charters.

You also can find a wealth of helpful information on CharterWave. We recently uploaded the 10 Best Charter Yachts for Families with Young Children as well as the 10 Best Charter Yachts for Families with Active Teenagers. And if you search CharterWave for the words “children” or “kids,” you will also find crew interviews like this one with Capt. Alec Cunningham of the 151-foot Delta motoryacht Katya, where the father of three regularly invites children onto the bridge to play with dolls. (It doesn’t get more kid-friendly than that!)

Also worth noting from The Triton survey: Only half of the yacht crew who responded said that their skills with children were discussed when they interviewed for their jobs onboard. If you have questions or concerns about a crew’s background, ask your charter broker for full resumes and additional information before signing your charter contract.

Italian Authorities Detain Motoryacht Axioma Charter Guests, Apparently in Error

On July 9, the 154-foot ISA motoryacht Axioma was detained by Italian authorities who had received a tip that Russian fugitives were onboard.
The yacht was escorted into the port of Lipari, where charter guests were forced to disembark and spend about five hours in the local police barracks before being released, according to multiple news reports. No arrests were made, and the guests and yacht were released.

Yacht-Zoo, which manages Axioma for charter, would neither confirm nor deny any of the details that have been reported. The company did confirm that Axioma had resumed a normal charter schedule, including beginning a new charter about a week after the incident.

The following video has surfaced on YouTube of authorities seizing Axioma and escorting the charter guests ashore:

Rodriguez Group logoFormer Rodriguez Chairman Released from Jail on Bond

On July 29, Alexandre Rodriguez was released on €1.5 million bail following 50 days in jail. Rodriguez recently resigned as the president of Rodriguez Group following charges of money laundering, harboring criminals, and abuse of corporate assets.

Rodriguez Group is the parent company of Camper and Nicholsons International, which controls the world’s largest fleet of crewed charter yachts. CNI has not been implicated by any charges.

However, investigators say the charges against Rodriguez involve his having made yachts available for free to other people who have been charged in the alleged money-laundering operation. Authorities call this abuse of corporate assets. Rodriguez’s lawyer has been quoted in European news reports as stating that a ruling is still awaited on whether the yachts were in Rodriguez’s name, or if they belonged to Rodriguez Group.

expedition vessel Aqua cabinExpedition Vessel Owner Adding Second Boat in Amazon

The owner of Aqua, a 130-foot “river expedition vessel” that Edmiston and Company began marketing in 2008 for charter on the Peruvian Amazon, is building a larger, more luxurious vessel to add to the regional program.

Aqua takes as many as 24 guests with 15 crew (that’s one of the guest cabins in the photograph at right). The new vessel, Aria, will accommodate 32 guests with 24 crew and four naturalist guides. Aria also will offer a hot tub, a gymnasium, and larger guest salons than Aqua provides.

“Anyone frustrated with Aqua being booked should consider this boat for the same clients,” Edmiston stated in the announcement to international charter brokers. Aqua and Aria will follow similar itineraries but arrive in destinations on opposite days, to preserve the remote feeling of an Amazon charter experience.

Aria is scheduled to launch in April 2011, just before the dry season that typically runs from June through November in the Peruvian Amazon.

Base rates to charter Aria are $73,500 for three nights, $98,000 for four nights, and $171,000 for seven nights.

Three Brokers Say: Travel Insurance

Is travel insurance for a yacht charter vacation a smart idea, or an unnecessary expense?

For the August edition of Three Brokers Say, we get insights—including information about policies that are now tailored specifically for charter yachts—from Ed Hamilton of Ed Hamilton and Co., Kathleen Mullen of Regency Yacht Vacations, and Rebecca Riley of Paradise Yacht Charters.

charter yacht Harmony III sky loungeMotoryacht of the Month: Harmony III

The owner of the 143-foot Benetti Harmony III put a lot of thought into alarms and monitoring systems during construction, with a goal of making the motoryacht as safe as possible for family charters beginning this summer in the Mediterranean.

He also made top-notch crew a priority. There are no fewer than three trained captains onboard: Capt. Robert Wilhelm, who has been a captain for nearly two decades; engineer Brian Smith, a licensed captain with 25 years of experience on yachts; and chief officer Mike Pluhar, who has spent 12 years in yachting following a career as an aircraft engineer.

Our First Impression review of Harmony III is online here.

charter yacht NostromoSailing Yacht of the Month: Nostromo

CharterWave editor Kim Kavin happened to tour the 98-foot Pendennis sailing yacht Nostromo on a rainy, chilly day in Genoa, Italy. A lot of yachts would have felt dark and cramped in those conditions, but Nostromo was the exact opposite. This yacht has a smart design filled with comfortable guest areas no matter the weather.

Our First Impression review of Nostromo is online here. Also note that management house Edmiston and Company is offering Nostromo this month in the Adriatic Sea and Western Mediterranean at a weekly base rate of €40,000, compared with the normal rate of €50,000 for August charter dates.

charter yacht Captain Peter DaveyCaptain of the Month: Peter Davey

Capt. Peter Davey doesn’t mince words about how much he loves his command, the 125-foot Moonen motoryacht Northlander: “You can walk on a boat and know whether she’s a lady or a bitch,” he says. “Ours is a lady—with a stout heart.”

Davey’s personal history is interesting, as well. He spent 16 years in the New Zealand navy and then 15 years as a computer salesman before enrolling in classes to become a yacht captain at age 52. And his wife has joined him in his new career, serving as Northlander‘s chef.

Learn more about Davey in our exclusive interview.

chef Lucie Dawson main courseChef of the Month: Lucie Dawson

Chef Lucie Dawson takes canapés and desserts most seriously aboard the 104-foot motoryacht Heavenly Daze: “I think canapés make the guests feel special because they’re so tiny and carefully made. And desserts can be works of art.”

Her luncheon of lightly battered snapper with Asian crunch salad (shown in the photo at right) was well received by leading charter brokers at the Genoa Charter Yacht Show in May. We snagged this exclusive interview with Dawson just as those brokers disembarked, with their bellies full of lime and white chocolate cheesecake.

charter yacht broker Sherry YatesBroker of the Month: Sherry Yates

Sherry Yates lived aboard a charter yacht in the Caribbean for 10 years before becoming a broker and opening the company Yates Yachts. She prides herself not only on her industry knowledge, but also on her environmentally friendly way of doing business.

“In addition to supporting yachts that advertise their efforts at sustaining our planet, all of my correspondence is done electronically,” she says. “That includes inquiry replies, yacht brochures, and charter agreements. Any paper I do generate is recycled. My office has solar-powered heat and I listen to wind-powered radio!”
